This is what the built-in Phase Scope preset does. It is in the Sprites - Animated folder of the After Effects animation presets, and it works on no layer: After Effects makes a new shape layer.

How to apply Phase Scope

  1. Click an empty part of the timeline so that no layer is selected.
  2. Open Window › Effects & Presets and paste the name in the search box.
  3. Double-click Phase Scope. A new shape layer appears with the preset on it.

Open the shape layer's Contents in the timeline. Fill, stroke, size and position are normal shape-layer properties.

Where is Phase Scope in After Effects?

Open Window › Effects & Presets and go to Animation Presets › Shapes › Sprites - Animated. It is quicker to type the name in the search box at the top of the panel.

Do I need to download Phase Scope?

No. It is installed with After Effects; this preview was rendered in After Effects 2026. On disk it is an .ffx file in the Presets › Shapes › Sprites - Animated folder inside the After Effects application folder.

How do I change Phase Scope after applying it?

Open the shape layer's Contents in the timeline. Fill, stroke, size and position are normal shape-layer properties.
